does anyone have any info/recommendations on any hostels or hotels that are in former castles in western or southern Germany? I know there are some on the Rhine, but I am hopeing there are some south of say, Heidelberg down to the Salzburg Austria area.
The Stadtalm is not castle-like. It is a rather plebian building built next to a wall of what once was the greater Hohensalzburg complex's outer works.
It does have good grub and excellent views, however. I have not stayed there and wasn't even aware it had rooms.
didn't Rick mention a youth hostel or something like that once that was in a renovated castle in Germany? I lost all my saved sites on the computer and can't find it.
The Schlosshotel Hirschhorn is nice - a bit east of Heidelberg on the Neckar River.

Hotel Schloss Steinburg in Wurzburg is also very nice. http://www.steinburg.com/index_en.html
Have stayed in both - the one in Wurzburg is the most impressive.

Have a look at these websites:

If you find one you are interested in I would attempt to locate their personal website or phone number rather than booking via the above websites. The above websites are trustworthy, but they will charge you more because they are a middleman agent.
We've stayed in several castles including Colmburg, Veldenstein, Lauenstein and a few others. It's a fun thing to do, but take a word of advice and plan your trip to see and do fun things. If a castle hotel happens to be nearby then great for you. But don't plan your entire vacation around getting to a particular castle or castle hotel.
