Castle Hotels in Germany?

We have decided to rent a car instead of using the train for our trip next summer. I want to take advantage of the car by staying at out of the way places not easily accessed without a car. I would love to stay in a Castle somewhere in Western Germany. Any suggestions?

I would also love to hear suggestions for a Chateau in the Loire Valley. I'm thinking about Chateau de Nazelles. My only concern is that it is fairly pricey and you can't check in before 4:30. We would be leaving the next morning so I'm not sure the splurge makes sense.

Thanks, Jill

I use Rick's books like a bible, so I already know about the hostel in Bacharach, and I've stayed at the Kranenturm. I'm looking for something just a little more upscale. A bit of a splurge that will take advantage of the fact that I'll have a car.

Germany has some 6,000 train stations, one of the densest rail networks on the planet - hard to drive without seeing train tracks. But a car is handy if you want to stay in castles, which are often high atop cliffs.

Hotel Auf Schönburg is a spectacular place - it's northwest of Frankfurt in Oberwesel overlooking the Rhine gorge.

Thanks Russ,

I actually enjoy riding the trains very much, however there will be 4 of us traveling together, and financially it makes much more sense to rent a car.

thanks for the tip on the castle hotel. I checked out their website and it looks very nice.

We've stayed in 4 or 5 castles in Germany, and some are more interesting than others. We've found all of our castle hotels on this website: http://www.german-castles.biz/ We've rented a few through this website also, although many of the castles have their own website where you can rent directly from them and save a few Euro.

Castle Colmberg is about a 15 minute drive from Rothenberg OdT. Also another nice one is Castle Veldenstein which is about a 30 minute train ride from Nuremberg. It's very close to the Czech border and dirt cheap - we had a huge 2 bedroom family room for 2 nights. Including breakfast the total was about 75 Euro for 4 people.
