Cassis, France and the Calanques

We will leave Nice and go west. Is it worth the detour to Cassis, spending the night there, and taking the boat trip to visit the Calanques? Or should we spend two nights in Aix before going to Avignon?

Hi Carol - I spent an afternoon in Cassis, just time for lunch and a boat ride. It's a beautiful spot and I wish I would have had more time there. I'd vote to spend the night.

The Calanques are beautiful and worth a visit, but do yourself a favor - don't get on a boat if the wind is up. We spent 3 very long hours on a boat viewing the Calanques on a windy day and everyone on board was ill and throwing up, except us and the crew - we knew to use the pressure points on our wrists and watch the horizon! Still, we weren't exactly the picture of health when we landed!!!

Cassis was a wonderful and serendipitous experience for us...we stayed at the Hotel Mahogany which is right on the waterfront with a small beach just west of the town...they had parking for our car...we ate at a wonderful small restaurant "Fleurs de Thym" which was better than all of the other restaurants we sampled except for Restaurant Pic in Valance (now a 3 star wonder with Sophie Pic as the head chef and only female 3 star chef in all of the Guide Michelin galaxie of stars). Do yourself a favor and stay there at least two nights to really take the time to enjoy this wonderful out of the way beach escape.
