The last time we were in Paris (2007) we bought the Carte Orange cards for use on the Metro. We're visiting the city again at the end of the month and would like to buy the Carte Orange cards again as they are so easy to access the metro. Are they still available? Or have they been replaced with the new Navigo cards? I understand you need a Paris "address" to get one of the new weekly Navigo cards. Will a Paris hotel address suffice? Thanks Gord
The paper Carte Orange has indeed been replaced by the Navigo. The passe Navigo Decouverte is specifically for visitors and I don't think you need to provide any address, only an identity photo. For details go here: http://tinyurl.com/8f9thz.
Thanks Tim - that is very helpful. By any chance do you happen to know what the cash metro fare is these days for a one way ticket on the metro? We're going to be in Paris for 4 1/2 days and given the cost of the Navigo Decouverte card, which you need to buy first, and then the Navigo semaine which you buy and load in for a week, it may just be better to pay cash each time. Thanks again
You're welcome, Gordon. A single t+ ticket costs 1.70 EUR. A 10-ticket carnet costs 12.00 EUR. For your limited time in Paris I suggest that you buy carnets as needed and share the tickets. A ticket is good anywhere the metro goes (some lines end in zone 3) and on the RER in zone 1. Be sure to keep each ticket until you exit the system. The new t+ ticket is also good for bus transfers up to 90 minutes after boarding the first bus (but not bus to metro or metro to bus). Single tickets bought from a bus driver do not allow for transfers.
Perfect - Just the information I was looking for! Thanks a bunch, Tim. Gord
Can you use the Navigo pass on the bus as well as the metro?
Yes, the Navigo is good on the bus. It's also good on the Montmartre funicular and on the RER and trams in the zones covered.
We used the Navigo Découverte passes this summer and saved a bundle, but we were staying outside Paris so we needed the suburban zones as well. It was so convenient, much easier than fumbling with the cardboard tickets and keeping the used tickets separate from the unused ones. We also learned that the Navigo is good for Vélib bike rentals as well, if you're interested in that. Just swipe the pass over the locking mechanism and the bike is yours!
Thanks Nelly - but you really don't want to see my wife and I riding bikes! :<) Gord
