Carcassonne is in the middle of a region with a fascinating midieval history - much more than can be summarized here. Here's a link to get you started on hotels, restaurants, local history and the tourist board for more information.

"Staying" in Carcassonne is a more complicated question. The Cite, the walled midieval town, has a few expensive hotels and a youth hotel. It's beautiful in the evening when most of the tourists have left. The Basse Cite is the town of Carcassonne itself and there are many more lodging options there. I don't think it's very remarkable but it does have its own sites.

Finally, you can park easily in Carcassonne. There are several lots outside the walls and in the lower town parking is no big deal.

Rick describes all that in his book, France 2009, including listings for lodging both in and outside Carcassonne.
