Car vs train in Switzerland?Italy

Planning a 2 week trip to Switzerland in August.

Proposed itinerary: Arrive in Zurich; Luzern; Berner Oberlander; Lugano OR Lake Como; Laussane; leave from Geneva. 3 people.

Any suggestions about cost/convenience of car vs train for all or part of the trip? And about desirability of Lugano vs Como (which would presumably require a car for at least that last part of the trip)?

Ed,

All of the locations you listed are easily accessible via train, so I wouldn't bother renting a car at all. Lago di Como (Varenna) is only an hour out of Milano; it's a very easy trip.

Same as Ken. You can easily get from Milano to Lake Como (Varenna) by train. Most travelers seem to choose Lake Como over Lugano.
