I am traveling to munich at the end of May. I will fly into Munich but do not want to stay there as I have already been 3 yrs earlier. During the trip I am looking for places to stop off at between Munich and Salzburg ti break up the drive. I am also looking for places to stop off at between Salzburg and Vienna. I loved visiting the fairy tale castle near Fussen and stayed at a small spa hotel there. I don't think it would be reasonable to go there on the trip, but would not mind revisiting. We arrive in Munich on a Tuesday and leave the following Tues. Also we booked the Grand Wein in Vienna but don't have any reservations yet for the rest. Anyone's help would be appreciated. Jacqui
The drive from Munich to Salzburg is only about 2 hours but you might want to consider Herrenchiemsee , another fabulous castle,or Berchtesgaden where you can visit Hitlers "Eagles Nest" home and take a boat ride on Konigssee.
A couple of stops from Salzburg to Vienna
Hallstatt= close, but worth a night on its own
Mauthasen Concentration Camp- Worth a stop and a tour, but I don't know if I'd stay in that area. I would probably go on to...
Melk- The Abbey is stunning and the Danube area is fun to visit.
Hi Jacqui,
Between Munich and Salzburg...
I agree that "Mad" King Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) is worth a stop to see. It's an amazing palace on an island in the Chiemsee, about an hour from Munich and about an hour from Salzburg.

The Berchtesgaden area is beautiful and worth seeing!
Bad Reishnehall in the Berchtesgaden area is a nice old town to visit also.
Hope this helps.

I would definitely stop in the German lake district. Prien am Chimsee is a particularly nice area, and you can go out on the lake, and see another of mad King Ludwig's castles. The Eagle's nest right outside of Salzg, or the Untersberg cable car provide fabulous views.
