We will be traveling between Chamonix and Nice next month (October). We like the mountains and aren't in a big rush, so should we go through Annecy and Grenoble or wind our way through the mountain passes along the border? Is the scenary more spectacular one way or the other? Any advice will be appreciated!

I have only been thru Annecy and Grenoble and thought it was just so-so. I can't comment on mtn route

What route did you take, and do you recommend it?
In two weeks we are driving from Nice to Chamonix and Annecy. Do you suggest the highway route through Italy to Chamonix, or was the rural mountain trip north from Nice to Chamonix worth it?
