Car Rentals In Spain

Well I have taken the suggestions of others on this board and we were planning to train to Seville for a week and take the bus to Marbella where we have a timeshare for the week. We then fly out of Malaga to Italy. Last trip was Madrid and Barcelona.

I cannot find a reputable car rental company (so far) without outragious rates. My last quote from Auto Europe was over $1000 for 7 days. We do need an automatic as neither of us drive a manual. I was able to book one in Sicily for $440 for the week. We have rented in Europe for years and cannot believe how high the rates are running.

Some of the other companies suggested on other boards are coming up with horrendous reviews. At this point I am thinking of scratching the plans we had to drive from Seville to Marbella and maybe just fly from Madrid to Malaga and just rent for a few days.

Any suggestions welcomed. We will have luggage (too much but limited) with us as we are going on a 2 week cruise out of Rome.

I'm a little confused. You say you plan to train to Sevilla for a week, then take the bus to Marbella. Yet you say you want to scrub plans to drive a car from Sevilla to Marbella.....

Sorry for the confusion.

Plan A-Take the train to Seville and then drive to Marbella where we have 7 days booked and then take the car to the airport.

or
Plan B Take a train to Seville...spend a few days and take the bus to Marbella (since the car rentals are much higher than we thought this trip).

or now

Plan C Forget the whole Seville trip to Marbella..spend the time in Madrid with day trips and then fly to Marbella. Get a ride to the Marriott and rent a car for a few days to tour and not a week.

I just found a $500 week rate Marbella to Malaga. Looking for other car rental options...if there are. Could not believ Auto Europe coming in at $1000 plus for the week. I will call them as well tomorrow.

Hope this is clearer.

I'm confused as well, but a quick check on kayak shows a manual out of Marbella for an arbitrary week in june at $313 -- switching to automatic makes it jump to $502.

Edit: Aha! The dreaded autoerope search. Use kayak.com, uncheck the expedia box and check the carrentals.com box. This will get you autoeurope as well as others -- the result is obvious this time, but it's not always true.

OK, that makes more sense. The option of busing to Marbella and picking up a car there is a good one.
If you want to save money, take the bus through to Malaga, cross the street to the train station, take the commuter train out to the airport, and rent there. www.carjet.co.uk, a broker I've used with great success, can give you a Peugeot 307 automatic for $300 US for a week, including CDW to $0. It's the best rate you'll find anywhere in Spain because of the competition out of Malaga airport. Then you can drop off the car just before your flight out.

Thank you. I did book the car as you suggested for about $300. Is there a direct train from Seville to Malaga Airport? And is this compnay on site at the airport or will we need to catch a taxi to their office? I noticed one of their offices looked to be about 30 min from the airport.

Thank You

There are about 10 trains/day between Sevilla and Malaga's main train station downtown. The Regional trains wind down thru the mountains, stopping a couple of times, take about 2 1/2 hours, and cost about 19 Euro per person. The Avant trains take the high-speed tracks up to Cordoba then down into Malaga...they take about two hours, and cost around 34 Euro pp. They don't stop at the Cercanias commuter station, altho they appear to be planning a stop at the airport for the high speed trains. It's been my experience that any ticket into Malaga gives you a ride on the Cercanias system as well, but check when you purchase. If not, the Cercanias system will only cost you a couple of Euro.
Malaga train station is new, but not all that large. As you leave the train and head towards the terminal doors, you'll see the Cercania tracks to your right. If your ticket includes a Cercanias trip, just go thru the doors into the terminal, make a right-hand U-turn, and head back out to the commuter train. If you have to purchase a ticket, there are automatic machines inside the terminal that are pretty easy to use.
I don't know which company you booked your car with. If it was carjet, you'll access a voucher on their website that you print off, and that'll give you all the details. All of carjet's companies have cars available at the airport itself, unless you chose the "basics" option....these companies will shuttle you to their depots, which are only a few hundred meters away, down the entrance road to the airport.
