car rentals and districts in Paris

I will be traveling from Florence, Italy to Paris with four young people in their 20's - my three sons and one girl friend. Should we rent a car or train? I will be going back to Florence to fly back to the state and they will be going on to London. Can I rent a car one way? And then travel back by train to Florence? Also, which district would you recommend to us in Paris - we would like to rent an apartment and have a "local" experience. We will be spending 5-6 days during the new year holiday. Thanks!

Check the price for five train tickets. Check the price for a car rental plus a second-country drop-off fee. It might be close. If you're going back to Florence anyway, the cheapest is going to be taking the car back. You can drive from Paris to Florence in daylight, but it's a bitch to pull off in one day if you're alone. If you're not up to it, Milan is within easy striking distance and you can take the train the rest of way if you think you'll be pooped. Everbody that's been to Paris at least once will have an idea of a place to stay.

Have you considered the size of the car you need for 5 people and luggage? That might and probably will increase cost. Also, if you haven't booked your flight, can you just fly home from Paris. Then again you need to consider as Ed said a second country drop fee. Also consider that if you have the car in Paris for 5 days or six are you going to just park it there the whole time and pay for parking while you are not using it? You have to consider the costs. Good luck and enjoy New Years in Paris.

Forgot about the parking fees - - plug in twenty-five euro per day in Paris, and that's if you get out toward the peripherique - - probably more in the central core.
