I intend to rent a car in Frankfurt and drive 4 days dropping off in Munich, with my small wife, my 6-3 son and myself 6-2. Looking at pictures of vehicles on the rental sites can anyone suggest a car size that will comfortably fit the three of us without maxing out with an expensive vehicle.

My brother and husband are your size and they fit fine in a compact car like the VW Golf - with me at 5'7" in the back. I wouldn't take anything smaller but if you want to go one up you may be a bit more comfortable. The Golf would be considered a "small" car in Northamerica but a "small" car in Europe would be quite a bit smaller than that.
