I am looking for suggestions on returning our rental car to a town south of Paris where we can get a train into Paris. We will be driving up north from Toulouse. I have read that the Versailles station is under construction, not sure if that is good drop off point.
Thanks
Not sure which car rental company you are using but Chartres is a good place to drop your rental if the comapny has a facility there. We have done this several times and took the train into Paris. Very easy.
How about Orleans?
There are two RER stations in Versailles. However, when we returned our car in Versailles years ago (with the same idea as you), we got stuck in rush-hour traffic. So depending on your schedule, you might want to return the car a little farther out.
Orly Airport would work. Good hours for the rental car office, good transportation into town and easy to get to from the Autoroute.
Eileen.. We always pick up and return our car to Orly when driving to or from Paris --going south. It is very easy.
I see there are two Orly drop off points, Orly and Orly south, which one have you used? I do not know who I will be renting from I am shopping for prices now. If I drop the car off at Orly, is there easy public transport to get into Paris? We are staying in the Hotel Daval,.near Place de la Bastille.
Thank you all for your help
Your hotel's Web site gives precise suggestions for getting from Orly to the hotel. See here: www.hoteldaval.com/en/access.php.
Of the choices listed, I would pick the Orlybus to Denfert-Rochereau and the Metro from there to Bastille with one transfer at Place d'Italie. The fare for the Orlybus is 6.10€. A single ticket for the Metro is 1.50€ (includes transfers).
Wherever you leave your rental car, check the location hours. Many are closed Sundays. I'd plan my car rental days around the cities I will be visiting. We wanted to leave our rental in Chartres but the office was closed on Sunday and had some other restrictions, so we had to bring it back to Versailles. It really did not matter to us but it did alter our plans. You must know before before booking where you will leave the car. In Versailles, the walk from the car return to the train station is a fair distance pulling your suitcase. Even if the train station is under some kind of construction, the train must still be running.
