Does anyone know for sure, if we can fly into the Netherlands, rent a car (at what point we need to, in order to leave it and enter France) Then stay in a villa in France for a week to use the car for day trips, and then, take the same rental into Switzerland for week? AND then if we do the route this way, where should return to fly home from? Need an answer on the car going from country to country and possible suggestions for itinery. (flying in and out, best recommendations) Thanks! (This is for Spring 2010)
Hi Sheryl. I returned yesterday from a trip to Germany/Austria/Belgium and the Netherlands. We had a car for the Germany & Austria portions and trained it in the Low Countries. When I checked with my travel agent they said that returning a car in a country different from where you got it from is quite expensive. Your case may be different so just call around. You would not need car in Netherlands so you could train it there and then take a train to wherever is convenient in France. Not sure about the Switzerland question; I think a car would be nice there but it would depend on cost or if you could circle back into France to return it.
The Netherlands has some of the worst traffic in Europe, and a very comprehensive rail network. I would not drive here unless absolutely necessary.
How long will you need the car for? If you need one for at least 17 days I would recommend you look into a lease. I did this through AutoEurope and it was a great experience. I am guessing that Canadians can rent through them. If not, maybe another company in Canada would work. If you just rent a car they will likely charge you a great deal more if you drop it off in a country different than the one you rent it in. The lease through AutoEurope can be picked up in a variety of countries, but a fee is charged to pick it up or drop it off outside of France.
