Someone just told me that car rental companies do not sell insurance (in France) for people 70 or over. Is this true? I've written to two agencies, but have not received any response. I checked with Visa and American Express, and although they offer insurance, they're restricted by the rules of the rental agency.
We are over 70 and we rented a car in France last fall. We've also rented a car in England the year before. We've never heard about buying insurance. We do take out the extra CDW as some countries will not honor our U.S. insurance. Don't really know which ones but we don't take chances abroad. We did need it in England when we struck a piece of metal dropped from a truck on the road and our tire was damaged enough to require replacement. No problems in France. Just the CDW.
I understand that the age limit is 75. My 74 year old husband just rented a car from Hertz. When we asked the agent at the rental desk about the age limit, she said that with a note from your doctor, you can rent a car after 75. Haven't checked that out yet.
