Anyone ever rented a car in the Loire? Ricks guidebook said if you just need a day or two to get it once you get there. 3 or more days book in advance in USA. I will need an automatic. Can anyone give me an idea of price for a rental day of once there? I have looked a few websites here and cost seems to be high (120euro) for automatic for a day.

We rented from Europcar in Amboise and it was fine...we paid about 100 euro but we didn't need an automatic since hubby drives a manual here at home

Many travelers here check out rates first at Autoeurope and then compare to other company's rates. Autoeurope is a consolidator that says they'll meet any other rate. Normally there's an extra charge for getting an automatic, automatics are the standard here in the US but unusual in Europe, which is why you'll pay more.The standard advice given here is you save significant money by arranging for the car rental from here rather than waiting until you're over there, regardless of the duration of the rental.

We rented our Loire car from Avis in Tours (actually St. Pierre des Corps suburban stop). Did it all by 800 phone while still home. It was convenient and worked perfectly. Small station, no traffic and easy as pie. Can't comment on pricing though; however, automatic is usually a lot more than the manual. Also check insurance...chances are yours will be void overseas. Driving in the Loire Valley was easy too.
