We have had to reverse our travel plan in order to get better price on flights. Now we're looking into flying into Barcelona and take the train from there to Collioure and rent car and then travel to Carcassone and the Dordogne. Is there a car rental facility near the train station in Collioure and how easy will it be to exit the city and make our way to Carcassone? Any scary roads with switchbacks and sharp drop offs? Thanks!

When we visited Collioure--admittedly years ago--there was really nothing by the train station. We had just dropped our rental car off in Perpignan, an easy short train ride away. I suspect that is where you will need to hire your auto.
And, we had just come from Carcassone. We took the scenic route, which I recommend, stopping at Peyrepertuse. It was plenty steep! though I would say only a problem for someone with real height phobia (speaking as someone without who is married to someone with).
There is a more direct route, too.
