Hi, we will be renting a car at the train station in Caen, France. Are there any things we need to be aware of renting in that city? Any ideas on which rental cars to rent from? Thanks so much for all the help we have received. Sue Dicke
Thanks Bets for the tip!
We rented frrom autoeurope 4 years ago and returned our car to their shop rigt across the street from Caen RR station. Very handy, but check Google maps on how to get to that area of town.
We too have rented in Caen after taking the train from Paris. It is very convenient. However just one caution -- if you return the car while the rental office is closed, your charges will be calculated when the office is open.
The last time we were in Normandy, we rented a car from Avis... right across the square from the SNCF station, and had no problems at all. We returned the car on the day after Easter, and the office was closed. We were instructed by Avis to give the car keys to the baggage master at the train station, which worked out well. Our rental period ended at 2PM that day, and that was exactly what we paid for. No additional fee due to the office being closed.
Most places in the world, if you have to use a key drop and you hook a note to the keys with the time of drop they'll honor it. If you give them nothing to work with they'd almost have to assume the worst case.
Another thing to keep in mind is if you're planning to visit Caen for a while before you drop the car off, give yourself lots of time...we visited the Peace Museum (highly recommended by the way) spent more time there than we expected to, then made the mistake of thinking it would be faster to drive through downtown to the rental office/sncf station than to take the ring road...and what a mistake that was...we did make it to the rental office on time, barely, and the manager was nice enough to let us go fill up the tank even though that technically put us into the next rental day.
I am becoming a regular car rental customer of Genut.com and I recommend that you contact Andy Bestor there for your car rental. He can answer your questions and probably get you a better deal than you can get online. They are physically located in OR and the website has great information on driving in Europe should you need that.
Thank you all very much! Your info has been a big help in planning our trip! Sue
