Two women traveling to Spain and Portugal - we want to rent a car but don't know if we should do it from the US or wait until we get to Spain. Any advice appreciated! Thanks! Anne
We rented our car for Spain from home as was advised by many travellers. Everything went well and Avis had the car ready for pick up at the train station in Madrid. Make sure that you get unlimited kilometres on the rental agreement, drop off the car at the end of your trip with no extra charges!
Book your car from the U.S. You'll know what you're going to pay, you'll be able to reserve the type of car you want, you won't have language barrier or currency conversion issues, and it's invariably less expensive to book in advance.
Book and pay for your car in the US. Go to the Autoeurope web site, and start playing with the many pick-up and drop off locations, and types of cars. It is amazing what a price difference you will find. AE, and Gemut, are brokers, based in the US, that handle all of the majors...and they do it for a lot less. If you have any questions, you can call AE at their Maine location, and they will be happy to answer any questions that you have. We have used AE for most of our EU trips with great success. They advertise that will meet or beat any competitors price. As an aside, we also found a fantastic rate in Portugal thru a rental outfit called "Guerin"; check them out also. Don't leave home without your personal GPS, a small fold out Michelin map of each country, your drivers license, and a copy of your International Driver's License, that you have picked up at your local AAA.
