Hi everyone
Can anyone recommend a reliable car rental firm in France? We'll be driving from Lyon and going into Switzerland and then ending up in Nice. We would like to book the car with just a few days notice - as we dont know how long we will stay in London yet. Has anyone else booked a car in Europe at short notice?
Cheers
Cathy
Booking a car on short notice can be quite expensive. The major companies - Europcar, Hertz, etc. are perfectly reliable. You'll find offices in Lyon and should be able to arrange to drop in Nice. But you'll likely pay for your spontaneity.
Also, bear in mind that you'll have to pay for an annual highway sticker to drive in Switzerland. I'm recalling something in the $30 to $40 range.
If you look at the Hertz web site, they give you the on-line price for booking in advance, and what it would cost you on the day, so you can compare.

I have had fairly good luck with SixT in France and Germany. I once went online and booked a car one block from my Paris hotel and was able to pick up the car 45 minutes later...... and at a good price. You will pay a premium price for dropping the car off in a city different from the pick up city. I would stay clear of National, as they have fewer sites, which may be hard to find and poorly staffed.
Check out www.autoeurope.com for pricing and booking. You can also call them directly to reserve a car. Have fun!
