We want to rent a car both in Germany and Italy for our upcoming Europe tril - Expedia.co.uk is considerably cheaper - has any one used them.

After using Europcar for many years, I tried gemut.com this year. I saved about 25%, plus got helpful advice. Will use them from now on.

Rental agencies vary in efficiency; so you can never tell what your experience will be. I would go with gemut.com based on Christina's experience.
I have used 10 different agencies in Europe in the past 20 years; never had a problem, but I have read the horror stories others have had. It's a gamble any time you rent on the net.
One thing I can suggest is that you photograph all sides of your car when you take it and when you return it.
I always do that and never have had to use the pix. But some people get bills for repair after they return home. Photos will be your only defense in that case.
