We will be visiting Nürnberg in early May and will be driving. We plan to see the Reichsparteitagsgelände first then north to the Altstadt. We're thinking of parking the car at the first stop and take the 9 Tram or S-Bahn to the city and visit there as pedestrians. Is there a better place to park the car, perhaps at the Hauptbahnhof?
We did exactly what you suggest when we visited Nürnberg as a day trip from Rothenburg in 2006. We had the rental car and preferred using it vs. taking the train, but did not want to drive into the city. We parked at a park ad ride and took the S-bahn into the town center, and nothing could be easier. They even had good maps online to help plan, and the local tourist office answered by enquiries about whether this would be a practical plan. We went to the Documentation Center, German cultural museum, and parade grounds and all were very worthwhile.

Thanks, we're doing exactly the same thing. By the way, we're driving from south (Munich) to north (Wurzburg and eventually Cologne). We've got the Landsberg, Augsburg, Dinkelsbühl, spending the night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, then heading to Nürnberg the next day.. We are staying in Rothenburg two nights and we would like to visit Bad Mergentheim and Würzburg while we're in the area, and are thinking of doing this the same day we go to Nurnberg; then coming back to Rothenburg early evening and spending the rest of the evening and night in Rothenburg. Then the third day head directly to the drive along the Rhine (Rüdesheim to Koblenz) on our way to Cologne. Will driving from Rothenburg to Nürnberg to Bad Mergentheim and Würzburg allow a somewhat leisurely visit in all three places? I think I'll also post this follow-up question on a different post in To The West.
