Has anyone rented a car in Geneve to drive to Provence (Avignon), or the reverse? Good highways? Time alotment? Any issues with rental cars crossing borders? Thanks! Brooks
Hi Brooks, I've driven this route in a rental car. The toll highways are great, but somewhat expensive. The secondary roads are also first class, but a bit slower. As I recall, it took about three or four hours, give or take. It may be faster to go through Lyon, but we went south through Grenoble, after staying several nights at Aix-les-Bains at Lake Bourget (a beautiful lake). The drive from Geneve to Grenoble and on to Valence is very senic. Avignon is one of our favorite cities in France. The border crossing should be no problem, but check with the rental company just to be sure. Charlie Robinson
Thanks, this is great help. We are contmplating this drive and thought it might be fun. Good information!
Determine whether your rental car company will charge a drop charge if you plan to rent in Switzerland and leave it in France. If it does, you may want to take a train into France and rent from somewhere there.
Also, Switzerland has a annual road tax. I's be confident that it will already be paid for a car you're picking up in Geneva, but you should be sure.
Border crossing is not a problem, I do it frequently. Second country drop fee stinks. Maybe train/bus/goat to Lyon and rent one there?
All, I now intend to arrive and depart through Geneve, so the drop fee shall not apply. I wanted to show my wife Geneve, and also the drive through the mountains must be nice. Thanks for your kind replies as this is helping make the decision. Best to all, Brooks
