A group of 4 will be in Spain in Sept., 2013. We will fly into Madrid and spend 3 days there. Then, we will rent a car and travel to Cantabria for a week. Would really appreciate suggestions about where to stay in Cantabria that is centrally/conveniently located for dau=y trips. Also, hotels, restaurants and sightseeing suggestions. We all speak Spanish fluently so the language is not an obstacle. Thanks, Gladys.
We very much enjoyed the town of Comillas for its Modernista buildings, including one of Gaudi's early houses. If prehistoric cave paintings interest you, there is one open to the public at Puente Viesgo. (What you are allowed to see at Altamira is a reproduction.) Also bit further west, into Asturias, near Ribadesella, there are the Caves of Tito Bustillo, reservations advised.
I agree, Comillas would be a good place. Easy access to the coast, and to Santander. I would also second the suggestion to see Tito Bustillo cave. It is free on Wednesdays, I think. Tours are in Spanish.
Santander is a bustling seacoast town...several reasonable hotels on the sea side at that time of year. A trip along the coast will be wonderful. Be sure to see the Caves of Altimira in Santilla del Mar...It is a village also worth visiting. Inland a bit you will find the hotel Palicio Sonames...Wonderful!!! And the mountain regions around it are filled with great views.
Thank you for all your great suggestions. Is Comillas "ively" at night=as far as having somewhere to go grab a drink and food. Thanks.
