I leave Austria May 20th and would like to spend a day at the Cannes Film Fest and Monaco Grand Prix. What's a cheap option within a train ride to do a day trip at each place? Or are these not worth going to? Are the Nice hostels still cheap, or do those prices go up, too?
Staying in Nice during the Cannes Film Festival shouldn't be a problem. Outside of joinging the crowds to try to see celebrities, there isn't much else to see. The screenings are not open to the public.
To see the Monaco GP you will need to buy a ticket. There is no place to view it without one. Hotels will be booked all over since this is a bigger event than Cannes. I'm not sure about the hostels but this close you may be too late.
The official screenings aren't open to the public, but most evenings you can watch the competition films on a giant screen that is set up on the beach, and open to the public.
The Gran Prix books out hotels for miles, including Nice and well into Italy. I found this out the hard way...
But Genoa was nice.
