Canary Islands, Spain any travel suggestions?

We are traveling to the Canary islands in mid-August staying on the south coast of Tenerife. Any site seeing "must see" recommendations in the area? Also, is it possible to get around without a car in that area or is car rental a must?

By all means go to the mountain in island center. You can get a cab relatively cheaply to go to the volcano.Views are amazing (there and on the way up and back)
