Canal St. Martin/Obercampf area?

Has anyone stayed in this area? Recommendation on hotels, food, or any other general comments?

A few months ago, my family stayed at the Hotel de vienne in rue de malte and they said that they'd go back. http://www.hoteldevienne.com/ It's nothing fancy. This is your typical small family-run French hotel, located in an old building that's been fitted with modern conveniences --- about 50 years ago. The metro station Oberkampf is steps away, and a short walk to Republique metro station. Meaning incredible access to the metro system.

We stayed at the Hotel De Nevers this past May. 53 Rue de Malte (Rue de Malte is a quiet side street with a bunch of budget hotels). The neighborhood has a variety of restaurants and is safe. The Canal St. Martin is a pleasant neighborhood by itself. On Tuesdays and Saturdays there is a huge outdoor market on Blvd. Richard Lenoir.

Place Republique is quite busy and surrounded by chain restaurants and night clubs. But the area along Rue Oberkampf has all kinds of surprises.

There are Metro connections everywhere at Republique.
