Canal St-Martin

All the other guidebooks talk about Canal St-Martin but Rick only mentions it in passing. I know if he thought it was overrated and not worth the time, he'd say so (I've read what he has to say about Heidelberg!) I thought it would make a good Sunday stop along with le Marais. Any feedback?

Hi Kerri, my last day in Paris I took the metro to the Stalingrad station. I then walked from there along Canal St. Martin until Place de La Republique. It's a good way to spend a Sunday in Paris.

The canal boat tours are a fun and low-key way to see a set of neighborhoods in Paris.

Hi, Kerri I think RS book needs to be d to include Canal St.-Martin. I found more information on other sites. Fodor and About.com have articles with a little history and what to see/where to eat. Parisbymouth.com has recommended restaurants/bars.
I plan to go in July. Picnic on Pink Flamingo pizza.

Hi Kerri, Yes, Canal St Martin is worth seeing. And as suggested above a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Paris, strolling the canal. We have not taken the cruise but they look like fun. However, it depends on how much time you have in the city. There is so much to see this may not be where you want to spend your time. We waited until our second visit---not enough time on the first visit (9 days). Enjoy Paris!

Finally on our 3rd trip to Paris in 4 years we took the Canal St-Martin tour. It was okay. My husband (and most of the other males + children) seemed to enjoy it more than I did as he was more interested in the lock system. A LOT OF THE TIME is spent going thru the locks themselves! Our trips to Paris are, usually, for 10-14 days long. Paris is full of so much energy, we like to take a couple of days days or several 1/2 days and just chill out and do something slow and peaceful - i.e. Hidden Parks (great New York Times Article on these!), Pere Lachaise, other parks, flea markets. The Canal tour certainly fit the slow and peaceful bill so I am not sorry I did it. Fun to see the people and children on the brides waving....a few interesting neighborhoods.
