We will be in Amsterdam for 4 days next month. While in town we plan to walk (because we like to) except when we're arriving and departing with luggage and then we'll buy a one hour pass. We want to take a day trip to The Hague and Delft. We're not buying an OV-chipkaart because we don't want to spend 30E (total for 4 of us) before we've even purchased any tickets. So my understanding is that the machines at the station take only chip and PIN credit/debit cards. No paper bills and no coins. So we need to use the ticket window which also won't take our credit card, so cash is the only option. We'll get a paper ticket. Anyone from the US done this recently that can confirm this?
Cash is your only option. The only plastic the machines and the ticket windows only accept is chip & pin. There are some machines that do accept cash (bills and coin), the windows also accept cash, but impose a small surcharge. Even though Amsterdam is a very walkable city, you should use the trams a bit...your feet will thank you;)
