I have a day to explore the outskirts of Salzburg. I want to go to a saltmine (not too interested in actual salt, more the experience of slide, lake etc). I also want to see pretty scenery such as Berchtesgaden and the lake - but have more than 40 minutes there. Any ideas about doing this via public transportation and not with a tour? Any response is appreciated! Also interested in hearing about any amazing tour to take - as a last resort.
More people, a lot more people, tour the Berchtesgaden area on their own than with a tour.
Great! Anybody have tips on how to do it? (I'm researching now). Also, is it possible to see the Hohenwerfen Fortress the same day? Again, all with public transportation. Thank you!
I don't think you'd have time to tour the salt mines and Hohenwerfen in one day without a car. Follow Rick's advice for getting to the salt mines via public transit. Oh, and Hohenwerfen is awesome! Well worth a visit, but we drove. The castle website has directions by train: http://salzburg-burgen.at/en/werfen/besucherinfo/anreise-routenplaner/index.htm
Janey, An alternative to travelling on your own would be to take a day tour from Salzburg. I've used Bob's Special Tours and had a great time. As they take care of all the transportation (Mini-Van) it's somewhat easier than using public transit. Happy travels!
Janey: If you are going to Berchesgaden and are planning to see the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) I believe that you need to have reservations. http://www.eagles-nest-tours.com/EN/eagles-nest-tours/index.php?navid=2 This is the tour we took, which was highly recommended. Rick Steves has endorsed it. It is definitely NOT to be regarded as a last resort!
I doubt you would have time in one day to see both the Eagle's Nest and the salt mines.
