Can we bring our kids into Hofbrauhaus?

I am planning our trip and would like to know if we can bring our kids (ages 7 & 11) into the Hofbrauhaus? I thought they would enjoy the oompah bands and seeing all the people. I was not sure if they could go in and just not drink. thanks!

They can go in as long as you are with them. Obviously, they cannot drink until they are old enough. It is also quite likely they will not be the only kids in the place.

Hello Karen,
Mr Larry Hawthorne has an excellent book on Munich beerhalls, title: The Beer Drinker's Guide To Munich, 6th edition. Very good book, but anyhow he has a list in the back of this book, he lists for example, the biggest, cheapest, closest from the Bahnhof etc etc...one of the headlines on the list is label: Best with Kids, here is his reccomendations:
Am Hopfengarten,Augustiner Keller,Aumeister,Hirschgarten,Leiberheim,Menterschwaige,Mischaeligarten,Seehaus,Siebenbrunn and Waldwirtschaft Großhesselohe
Hope this helps.

"Hofbrauhaus" is not a general name for beer halls.

THE Hofbräuhaus (Hofbraeuhaus) is the beer hall that serves Hofbräu beer. It is a little touristy, but fun. It is close to Marienplatz.

A LITTLE touristy?!

I believe the term Rick uses is "grotesquely touristy." Seemed like an apt description to me.

Say what you will, but I like the Hofbräuhaus. The beer is good, and the food is more than acceptable. And, as others have said, it is alot of FUN!

Your kids will love it!

Oh, I didn't mean to imply it wasn't fun. It was. I enjoyed it. It was a hoot. I think kids would love it (could make them want to start drinking at a young age...or might turn them off from it completely!). I just meant that describing it as "a little touristy" was quite an understatement.

Personally, my only real gripe with the place was that it was very smokey.

I wouldn't dream of visiting the Hofbrauhaus and not bringing the kids. It's a fantastically fun and touristy place. They also have very good food, wine, and of course beer! As a matter of fact we took our school group of 15 year olds there and they had a blast.

Tim I think you mean you would dream of NOT bringing them?

The Hofbrauhaus is a fun, touristy place to go. For a more authentic experience, try the Augustiner restaurant at Neuhauser Strasse 27. It's on the pedestrian street in between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz. Try the weisswurst. Just remember to split the sausage open first and then just eat the inside. If you like beer, the Augustiner beer is truly superb.

Central location to the Hofbrauhaus would definitely include the areas of Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. Hofbrauhaus is located at the rear of the Hotel Platzl (but not very affordable). Viktualienmarkt includes the very cost friendly hotels of the Hotel Blauer Bock and Hotel am Viktualienmarkt.

We have also been wondering about the same thing as we have two children aged 6 & 9 that we would like to take so this has been helpful - thanks. What I would however like to ask everyone out there is: Do the oompa bands & entertainment take place all day and evening or is it just at certain times? And another question is: Can anyone suggest accommodation that is centrally located but not too costly. We will have our own transport so don't need to be located close to the train station but would prefer something with a bit of character.

Karen, go to the Augustiner Brewery. It's a beerhall/garden with wonderful food and great beer. It's the oldest brewery in Munich. It's also a lot cheaper than Hofbrauehaus. We found it when the front desk clerk at our hotel recommended it. It's my husband's favorite beer in the world...

Amy, a lot cheaper. I find that hard to believe. A little cheaper, maybe? But not a lot cheaper. I found the Hofbräuhaus rather inexpensive. Here is the menu from Hofbräuhaus. In 2007, following a main meal at Andechs, I had a lighter evening meal (Brotzeit) at the Hofbräuhaus for €12 (€13 today, with a bigger tip), including a full liter of beer :) and tip.
