We are staying in Munich for one night; we would love to stay in Marienplatz but are having trouble finding a budget hotel. Would it be smarter to stay by the train station since we are staying only one night and leaving on a train in the early afternoon? Any suggestions?
I would suggest the Hotel Jedermann near the train station. Marienplatz is only about a 10-15 minute walk from the station or you can take the bahn.
Hubby and I stayed between 5 and 10 mins from the train station at Hotel Uhland. It is not so so budget but the breakfast is great and the rooms were comfy and quiet. http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html#Navigation__
The first night we were there we walked to Marienplatz and it took about 20 mins but after that we just took the Sbahn. We caught it at the train station.
Two very nice budget hotels near MarienPlatz and Viktualienmarkt are 1) Hotel Blauer Bock and 2) Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt.
They are in much nicer and more interesting area than the train station.

Actually a very good website to see locations of hotels in Munich is here:
I stayed at the Hotel Ludwig opposite the train station. Tourist class hotel. Read my and other reviews on tripadvisor.com
We also stayed at Hotel Uhland which I found to be cheaper than the ones closer to Marienplatz. There is subway stop less than 5 minutes away. It was clean and comfortable and breakfast was decent.
We stayed at Hotel Monaco www.hotel-monaco.de a couple of years ago. It's 3 blocks from the train station (in Rick's "budget hotel" area). It's in a non-descript building, but across from a 4* place. It's quite cute once you get inside. Munich is easy by metro or trams (it's quite walkable as well). Some people are concerned about the area, but we had no problems (even leaving at 3:00 a.m. to walk to the train station).
I went last year and stayed at Hotel Royal as mentioned in Rick Steves Book. The breakfast buffet was awesome. I believe that Rick Steves mentioned that it had strip joints on both sides. It was no big deal. In fact, I really didn't even notice wasn't paying attention. It's not like it jumps out at you. I paid 164,70 Euros for 2 nights, but that was last year.
