I am traveling to Paris, Brussels and around Luxembourg in mid-August 2010. I can't find any Rick Steves' books with Luxembourg travel. Am I missing something? Other suggestions if he doesn't have a guide book?
Find another guide book - like Lonely Planet.
Especially because you'll be in Belgium, supplement your research with another guidebook. There is far more to see in Belgium than Brussels and Brugge, the only two cities included in Rick's book.
Also check out Michelin Green Guide.
You can't even find Luxembourg when you just entered the country from the German freeway. If you miss the first exit within Luxembourg you're already in Belgium. ;-) They've got good food but other than that I wouldn't go out of my way just to see Luxembourg. A day trip to Trier or the Mosel river valley is much more exciting...
The book you seek is Rick's "Amsterdam & Benelux"
Be - Belgium
Ne - Netherlands
Lux - Luxembourg
Oops, Milles pardons! I see that the book, I have a copy, is out of print. Maybe you can find a copy at your library or from some helpful person. (The new 2010 book is now titled "Amsterdam, Brussels, and Bruges.)
... except that there's nothing about Luxembourg in it, and only two cities in Belgium....
From Today's Gadling Blog:
Why Luxembourg Matters
Why Luxembourg? I lived in northern France for a few years in the early 90's and had good friends who lived there and in Luxembourg tell me how beautiful the Gand Duchy was. I never had the chance to actually get over there and so it is on my "Must See" list for this trip.
Lux is on my list because of the sheer number of well-preserved castles within close proximity and pure European charm of the area. I am planning on Esch-sur-Sure, Luxembourg City and of course Vianden Castle. They are also having a great festival in Luxembourg City on the dates I will be there.
I will strictly be in Brussels for 2 days then to the Luxembourg sites for 2 days (via Jahay - Modave - Dinant - Lavaux Ste. Anne - Bouillon) followed by Paris for 4 days (via Luxembourg - Metz - Reims). These routes and locales have a specific sentimental meaning to me so I will not be deviating from the planned destinations on this trip (sorry Germany, Brugges, Ghent, Amsterdam, etc.)
I mostly am looking for a good guide book with info on quality accomodations and the footwork done for the sites I will be visiting all in one compact directory.
How about these websites:
Visit Luxembourg
Luxembourg City Tourist Office
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
Just checking, but you're aware that Dinant is in Belgium, correct? It's a beautiful little town on the river, although there's not a lot to actually do there. The citadel looks impressive, but the inside is almost completely empty.
And although I admit I've never actually gone out of my way to look for one, but I've never seen a castle in Luxembourg. Are you referring to the ramparts within the city? I wouldn't exactly call that a castle.
Tom, there is a castle in the town of Vianden, a place it looks like Rob is intending to visit. I hate to use this word, but it's really a cute town and the castle on the hill makes it rather picturesque.
