We will stay for 2 and 1/2 days in Florence this May, and we have allotted 1 day for both Pisa and Siena. Will this plan be too difficult logistically, timewise/effortwise?
I did Pisa in a day. There is not much to see there except for the tower so I remember it was a very quick stop over. We took the early train there and we were back by late afteroon.
You need at least half a day to see the highlights of Siena, so, if you add in the travel time, you really don't have time to properly see them both. If you're coming from or going to Rome, then you might make Siena a stop-off on the way. If you're coming from or going to Cinque Terre, you could do the same with Pisa.
Thank you very much Kate and Tim for your replies. Going by your suggestions, both Pisa, Siena cannot be clubbed the same day. We will probably do only Siena and will try to make a stop over in Pisa when we are returning up north from Rome.
Kent,
We plan to do Siena/Pisa by train or bus. Did you have any suggestion please?
You can't do both in a day by train or bus.
Although this can physcially be done, I wouldn't recommend it. I call this a "blink and run for the train" itinerary. Your looking at a minimum 5hr. round trip from Florence to Pisa (3hrs on the train, 30-40min. roundtrip on the bus to the tower, 1hr to see the tower and adjoining grounds). You could leave early and be back by noon. Have lunch at the McDonald's across the street.
To get to Siena, you walk about 2 blocks from the train station to the SITA bus station. Again, about 3hrs round trip and 2hrs. to "blink" at the square and a few other sites and back to Florence. Note, however, that evenings in Siena are quite entertaining so you might want a late bus back.
Hardly anybody on this site will recommend doing both in the same day. I certainly don't. I'm just pointing out that it can be done when you consider that you will spend more time on the train and bus than you will looking at the sites.
Thanks again Larry for your comments. We dont want visiting Siena/Pisa to be "just a blink" too. We will do Siena{as most people seem to love this place} rather than Pisa. If time permits we will plan a stop-over in Pisa on our northward journey.
Thanks Doug for your reply.
