I am planning a trip to Salzburg and would like to know if I can drive our rental car to the Eagles Nest Historic Viewpoint or if taking a tour is the only way to get there?

You can't drive TO the Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) as the road is private and only specially equiped buses drive it.

Thank you, Steve! I was only interested in driving up there for the view. Does anyone know of any other great places I could drive up to near Salzburg with a great view of the mountains? The higher up the better.

For scenery, it might be good to drive toward Hallstadt from Salzburg.

You can drive your car to a point but not all the way up to the Eagle's Nest. You can take a special bus to the top. I can highly recommend the tour by David and Christine Harper. The following link will explain their tour.
