The new TGV Est now connects Paris with Strasbourg and Alsace or Black Forrest in just a bit over 2 hours which makes for a perfect weekend trip.

I like Avignon, about 3 hours by train from Paris. Avignon itself is very interesting with a few inexpensive hotels (check the Rick Steves book on France). From there you can daytrip to Aix or Arles. Another choice would be to head west to Bayeux or Honfleur.

We were in Paris for 3 weeks and our only side trip was to Amsterdam. We loved it. Go visit the VanGogh Museum and the red light district and don't forget to try a few beers there.

The new TGV East not only moves Alsace and the Black Forrest within a 2 hours radius, it would also allow you to visit Stuttgart, the Porsche and Mercedes museum or Heidelberg and its castle for a weekend...

I was in the country last August for a wedding. I highly recommend Beaune, near Dijon...fabulous place, and the Hotel De Dieu is not to be missed. Recommend the Henry 8 hotel, just outside the city gates about one block.

Have a good time whereever you go.
