I'm just gonna be there a day before a connecting flight. I have done some research, but does anyone know a convenient one they can vouch for?

That sounds good. Is Amsterdam's rail service good? I assume it is from what I have heard.

Steve's recommendation is an excellent one, and yes, the train to the center of either city mentioned above is relatively fast and reliable. I agree with obtaining Rick Steves' Amsterdam, Bruges, & Brussels guidebook since it clearly explains how to get to these locations via public transport and it has listings of places to stay. If you don't want to purchase a copy (since you'll be there for less than 24-hours), check it out at the library and read/copy what you need.
