Camping in Switzerland +Cow Descending?

We currently live in Germany. We have heard a lot about festivals when the farmers bring the cows down from the alps. 1) Does anyone have dates/towns for these? We would like to go to the Gimmelwald area if there are any around there. 2) To save some money, we would like to camp as well (same area). We are having a hard time finding actual camping sites. However, when I contacted the Gimmelwald tourist site, they said you could pretty much put your tent up wherever??? Has anyone tried this before/ where?
Thanks!

I would recommend that you look at www.stechelberg.ch web site and there you will find a great campground in Stechelberg. Also a great campground in Lauterbrunnen called Campground Jungfrau I believe - it is more upscale than the one in Stechelberg and much busier. Both locations are ideal in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The Lauterbrunnen Valley is our favorite place in the world.

We were there in very early June when the farmers walk their cows up to higher pastures. This seems to occur from mid-May through early June. The cows were coming through both Lauterbrunnen and Muerren on the way up. I'm sure they go up higher from Gimmelwald as well be we didn't see that part. In the fall, they all come back down. I just don't know the fall dates.
