I'm planning a Bavarian road trip with a friend of mine from Berlin. So we are going to meet in Munich, and rent a car (need some advice on cheap rentals too !). I'm looking for some reliable places to camp along my approximate route:http://tinyurl.com/3m2wght Here's a quick Summary of our road trip to give you an idea of timing: Sept 8: Meet at MUC at 1800, Pick up car, Drive to near Fussen. Sept 9: Morning: Neushwanstein and Ludwig's other castle. (early early so we want to stay close to the castles)///rest of the day: hike around, maybe stay in the same place that night. Or start driving east. Sept 10th: Drive to Berchtesgaden. Stay overnight Sept 11th: Morning: Eagles nest.///after: Drive back to MUC and drop off car. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

Chris Sorry I can't provide any actual camping places because we haven't camped in Bayern but I can just say that it is illegal in Germany to "wild" camp - all camping must be in proper campgrounds. I expect that's what you were planning, from the tone of your question , just to be sure.
Nah, I'm looking for some good cheap campgrounds.
Check your local book store or library for the "Traveler's Guide to European Camping" by Mike & Terri Church. Also you could google camp grounds in Bavaria .
Chris, check out this website: www.alpencamp-marienberg.at/ This campsite is in the Zugspitze Arena. It's in the valley with the Zugspitze and local Austrian alps all around. Lots of hiking in the area. The ski lifts will take you up to the mountains for hiking and biking. Next to the campground is a summer luge. One of the best luge rides, according to my son. Also good restaurants and grocery shopping in the area. The towns close to this campsite are Lermoos, Ehrwald and Biberwier. We always stay in this area to go to the castles. From this campground, you would travel through Reutte and then north into Fuessen to see the castles. It's an easy drive and not very far. From the above campground, you could go southwest through Innsbruck to head to Salzburg. You would go over the Fernpass and then autobahn the rest of the way. Check your maps for the route. Remember, that the Eagle's Nest is located in Obersalzburg, not Bertchesgaden. Make sure you allow enough time to go up to the Eagle's Nest (only by bus) and go through the Nazi Documentation Center Museum. This museum is great. You go through Hitler's bunkers at the end. Don't miss it. Hope the above info helps.
