Camino questions re: theft of backpack.

How frequently do entire backpacks get snatched. I know how to keep money and cards hidden, but the backpack?

Wendy, I've never walked the Camino myself, but know someone that walked the entire route last year. Based on what I've heard, the only times a Backpack could be stolen would be when you stop for meals, or at night when you're in a Hostel with perhaps 100 other travellers. The remainder of the time, it will be on your back so there shouldn't be any risk of theft. If you're vigilant, I suspect the risk will be minimal. As you noted, it's a good idea to keep valuables on you. If you're travelling with someone else, you can "take turns" watching the gear. Happy travels!

My friend walked entire Camino. She never heard of anyone having their entire pack stolen. Petty theft of small items left unattended would be more likely as its easier for a thief to be caught walking away with a whole pack. But can't imagine you are lugging around anything more than an iPod or a small point and shoot digital camera in your pack. Bring a cable lock if you are really worried about theft of your entire pack and secure it to something fixed in the hostel room.
