My wife and I would like to backpack this famous trek because we hear such good things about the journey. We are in our mid 20s and are alright with forgoing luxury in favor of saving cash. Any suggestions or tips about what to expect from experience or 2nd hand tales?
A year in which the feast of St. James, July 25, falls on a Sunday, is regarded as a holy year.
2010 is a holy year.
In Catholic tradition, if you make the trek in a holy year, you gain a "plenary indulgence."
From what I have read, as many as 250,000 pilgrims are expected to make the journey this year. The pilgrimage is known as the "Chemin de Saint-Jacques."
If you do it, you'll have plenty of company. Good luck!
Read "What the Psychic Told the Pilgrim" (can't remember the author's name off the top of my head). It's a great account of walking the Camino from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela. It's more than just "foregoing luxury", it is a fairly grueling, weeks-long trek.
