We are going to be in Spain for 3 weeks in November. Can anyone tell me the best way to call home while we are there. Our local cell phone will be roaming and I think it will be very expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Without a doubt, the cheapest way to call the US is from a "locutorio" (Call center). These can be found in just about any immigrant neighborhood, although probably not in the posher parts of town. The second cheapest way would be to purchase a calling card (usually from a "locutorio") and use that to call from a payphone. If my memory serves, you'll get roughly 175-200 minutes for €5 with a calling card.
If you’re travelling with a laptop and have Wi-Fi access, VoIP calling is free with carriers like Skype. International calling cards may also be purchased from reputable sources online before you leave…your “card” will be sent to you instantly via e-mail. While in country, you can typically buy pre-paid calling cards at the airport, newsstands, tobacco shops, etc. It’s one of the least expensive ways to go…something like 2.5 cents per minute.
I brought my netbook with me, and used Skype. It worked great!
Skype!!!
Also, check on the price of local calls to cell phones while you're there. In France, the cost is through the roof to call a cell phone locally. It cost me around $50 to make a 5 minute call to someone in Lyon from Paris- a mistake I will never make again!
