If you are staying in Woodbridge, Suffolk you will need to travel into London and then by train to Dover. You have two choices by train to Dover: the traditional train from Charing Cross or the faster but more expensive train from St Pancras, which is also closer to Liverpool Street station where you'll arrive from Woodbridge. You can get train times from www.nationalrail.co.uk, and for times and fares for both of the routes from London to Dover http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/. For tickets from Woodbridge to London see http://www.nationalexpresseastanglia.com/. Both sites should be able to sell you a through ticket from Woodbridge to Dover but it is possible that there may be cheaper special deals available if you get separate tickets for the two legs. When you book the ferry leave yourself plenty of time to connect with the train at Dover, as the trains no longer run all the way to the docks and you will need to get a bus or cab from Priory station. The Channel Tunnel trains from Folkestone to Calais are ONLY for passengers travelling with vehicles. If you want to travel by train you need to get the Eurostar from London. Very few of those trains stop at Calais, though. But I'd be interested to know why you want to travel to Dover or Calais. If it's just for the tradition and romance, I don't think the experience is worth the time it'll take, and neither town is high up the levels of tourist interest imo. If you just want to get to France from Woodbridge, my personal impulse would be to get a taxi or hire car (or smile nicely at your daughter if she can drive) to Stansted Airport and look for a flight from there to wherever you want to go in France.

I'd like to ask you, carolyn, too, about your greater needs. The reason I ask is that I wonder if you need Calais for a particular reason or if you are actually just trying to cross the Channel. Very, very near to your location in Woodbridge, Suffolk is Harwich. Certainly, as crows fly - if they actually do - its just a few miles, much closer than London and Dover. From Harwich it is an easy ferry ride to Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands. There is an inexpensive deal available from a British train station to the ferry, the ferry trip, and Dutch trains to any Dutch city. From there an easy train trip can take you to Amsterdam, Brussels, or Paris, etc.
