I need to spend a few days in early August in the Calais area. We aren't destitute, but nor are we royalty. $100/night +/- Clean, quiet, with cafe au lait and rolls in the morning would suit us just fine. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Hotel de la Plage on the beach north of the recreational marina. Right at a hundred bucks, it's my second choice since you have to hike all the way around the boat basin to get to the good places to eat. The Beffroi is around seventy-five dollars and right in the middle of town. However, Cain can get noisy at night. There's a Kyraid way out halfway to the tunnel, That chain is even cheaper, maybe sixty bucks. They're okay, but not for several days in a row if you're going to do anything in the room except shower and sleep. No good places to eat. I've never stayed in that very one, but they're all identical.
Etap or Formule 1 would be even cheaper, walking distance to Cite Europe shopping centre and the tunnel is next door. I have no idea what $100 is now. Prices in France are in Euros.
We stayed at Hotel Clery in June, 2008. This is a beautiful historic hotel near the Calais ferry, an excellent choice for a first or last night in France. It has a good restaurant and pleasant grounds for strolling. (Napoleon stayed in this mini-chateau; supposedly he decided not to invade England while he stayed here.) While this hotel doesn't fall into the budget category, others reading this post might be finding it hard to find good choices in this area---it took me quite a bit of searching to locate this one.
