Husband and I are going to France in September 2012. We'll be in Paris 5 nights, then taking the train to Caen, renting a car, then driving to Mont St Michel for an overnight. I'm looking for tips from anyone who has done this. Specifically: 1. How easy/difficult is the car rental at Caen Train Station? 2. I'll be using Michelin maps and GPS but any recommendations/tips would be appreciated. 3. Anything we should stop to see or avoid on this drive? 4. How long will it take for the approximately 75-80 miles?
5. How easy/difficult is it to reach our hotel from the road once we reach the Mont St Michel area? We're staying overnight at "Les Relais St Michel". Many Thanks!
1. It's across the street. 2. Get off the freeway right after you cross the La Salune river (it will look more like a creek) - - the sign will say 'MSM, St Malo, St Brieuc'. If you try to ride the freeway any further you'll get tied up in bus and truck traffic. 3. Just do it, there's not much to see except Avranches which is a pretty good lunch and wander spot. 4. An hour and a half from either Caen or Bayeux. 5. The hotel's right at the land end of the causeway on the east side of the road - - you can't miss it.
Thanks Ed. Sounds pretty simple. I do know that whenever we drive on our trips to Europe, we always, always run into delays or miss a sign or something to delay our trip. Nice to have a ball park time frame so we can tell if we're off track at some point.
It's four-lane most of the way. There's only one place to screw up. After you make the turn past the La Salune (which will still keep you on four-lane), you'll only go a mile until you switch to two-lane roads (look for the green MSM sign). After that, there's more green MSM signs the whole way. On that last little northbound stretch, as soon as the mont comes into view, look on your right for the hotel. It has a lot of red/orange on it (but so does everything else on that hunk of road it seems).
Great. Sounds like you've done this trip before! Let me know if you have any other recommendations too, i.e., places for dinner on/near the Mont.
