Caen as home base

Hi

We are planning a trip to Low country in April 2011, with four days set aside in Normandy for sites to include Mt.St.Michel, D-day beaches, etc. Considering Caen as home base-would like opinions and also recommendations for hotels

Thanks as always

Mike - I loved Bayeux and the Hotel d'Argouges. Don't miss the tapestry.

I will second Bayeux as the whole town is simply beautiful, with a wonderful old cathedral, a great WW2 museum and the British cemetery is there too. We really enjoyed strolling the small streets in the morning and evenings after our 2 day Battlebus tour.

We stayed in 2 different B&B's, our favorite being Hotel de Sainte Croix. Gorgeous, large rooms with large beds and bathrooms, fantastic breakfast, and really good prices. Whole place was filled with antiques and beautifully decorated.

You have to remember that Caen was pretty much flattend and the rebuild was on the sterile side.

Bayeux still has the old charm and ambiance.

I agree with the others...we love Bayeux. And Grier is absolutely right...we love Hotel D'Argouges and highly recommend it.

I also recomment Bayeux. We rented a great apartment (from gites.com)next to the cathedral for two weeks at a very good price.

Bayeux is closer to the battlefields than Caen and much more picturesque!

Thanks all for your thoughtful response. I am so glad to have asked and will reconsider homebase choice.

Stay cool!(its 100 in DC today)
