We're planning a trip next May to Andalusia, incl Sevilla, Jerez, Cordoba, and Granada for sure, almost certainly a couple white towns, and surely "the biggies" in Madrid whatever that turns out to mean. While we're in Jerez for the horse show and a sherry tour, I'm curious about opinions for or against continuing to Cadiz for at least a short walkabout, to see some of the historical spots, and then returning to, probably, Sevilla, which is likely our home base at that part of the trip. What d'ya all think? P.s., I'll keep reading books, of course, but I do value personal "been there done that" opinions, too. Thx.
We made an afternoon visit to Cadiz and enjoyed it. There are 2 or 3 self-guided walks to view the historical sites; at the visitors center they can give you the brochure and you follow a colored line and read as you go. A climb to the top of the bell tower is worth it for the view. We were there in May and found Cadiz to have relatively few tourists. The town was quiet during siesta hours and really picked up when the locals came out again after 4pm.
Train time from Sevilla to Jerez is about an hour....from Jerez to Cadiz about another hour. If the horse show is a noon show, then you might be able, if you can get an early enough train, to go to Cadiz first and do some sightseeing and then train back to Jerez for the horse show. Depends on how much there is in Cadiz that you are interested in seeing as to whether you can get it done in a few hours. Looks like you had another question on this forum about doing Jerez as an overnight or day trip from Sevilla. You might be better served to make Jerez your home base for a few days and take day trips from there to Cadiz and to Sevilla. You would spend less time traveling and more enjoying what you came to see. My suggestion would be to lay out a complete itinerary of all the things you would like to see first and decide on the most logical way to do that to minimize travel times and to see if it is actually feasible to do all the things you want to do in the amount of time you have. I would also suggest that you lay out your trip in such a way as that you are not back tracking over the same territory but more like making a circle......probably starting out and ending in Madrid.....which is probably the most convenient airport for the cities you have in mind. Train from Madrid to Sevilla is 2.5 hours. Madrid to Granada is 4.5 hours. Granada to Sevilla is 3 hours.
Thank you both, for your answers. Thx too, Elizabeth, for answering both posts! I won't repeat myself there.
I loved Cadiz. We were there in November of this year. Love the walk around the town, exploring narrow streets, strolling through the parks and plazas on a Sunday, and eating tapas in a local bar. Don't miss the tower climb. (Senior rates there if you are over 65 btw). Relaxing place.
