They all look wonderful! Are they doable as day trips from Barcelona using public transit or are they treks that really demand overnights? Thanks
Sitges is suburban rail and should be only about 30 minutes from central Barcelona. Figueres is a longer journey, more like 90 minutes to two hours each way, but still quite doable. Both of them count as local journeys with Spanish rail, so there's no price or reservation need to book in advance.
My daughter and mother in law went to Barcelona last year and easily did the day trip to Figueres via the train. They both loved the Dali museum even though they got a little lost walking there from the train station. They wanted to do Cadaques but it's more challenging w/o a car because of limited train service there. I should know because I helped them figure out how to do this! Rick Steves book has a great section on this.
WE frequently go to Sitges for the day -- quite easy and enjoyable. Figueres and especially Cadaques really are farther away, and as others have said, probably worth overnighting in the area. You might consider spending the night either in the fantastic hostal on Cap de Creus or en Roses/L'Escala. The first gives you spectacular views of the most northeastern point on the Iberian peninsula and an easy access to Cadaques. The second allows you to visit the Figueres area as well as some of the medieval stuff in the Begur area and the ruins at L'Empuries.
Thanks all very much. You make Sitges and even Figueres seem like perfectly reasonable day trips.
Right now we have five nights in Barcelona, arriving by train from Madrid and leaving by air to Granada on day six. How would the logistics be if we tried to put Figueres and Cadeques either the first or more likely the last night of the Barcelona stay. I'm thinking maybe four nights in Barcelona, then train to Figueres, overnight up there and then on day six get back to Barcelona and fly out late that day.
Anyone see any strong plus or minus to this? It saves checking out of the Barcelona hostal and then checking back in two nights later.
And thanks again fr the information and ideas!
