We're planning to travel to Switzerland next May. Does anybody know when the cable car between Steckelberg and Gimmelwald is shut down for maintenance?
You check this at the Swiss Rail site:
Simply enter the exact travel date, and it will show you if the cable car is operating. But you may have to wait several months, as I doubt next year's schedules have been finalized yet.
If it is shut down, you can get to Gimmelwald by taking the gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp and then the cog train to Murren. Once in Murren, walk 8-10 minutes to the other end of town and take the gondola to Gimmelwald. It's not too much longer than the route you describe as you will have to take the post bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg anyway. By the way, in Lauterbrunnen, the post bus stop is right in front of the gondola station I described above. They are within feet of each other.
Bill,
Maintenance on the Schilthornbahn is usually done earlier in the year, perhaps February or March. I'd be very surprised if they would take it down for maintenance at that time of the year.
If you check at the beginning of 2010, they usually have a bulletin on the website.
Since there are two routes up and down the mountain you will never be without transportation...unless something catastrophic happens to the public transportation system as a whole.
