According to an announcement today, MiniEurope, probably the most kid-friendly attraction in Brussels, will close permanently in August. The piece of land on which it sits is being redeveloped as a residential-shopping-entertainment complex, and apparently, MiniEurope did not fit in with the overall plan. No word on if it will be re-created elsewhere. And because this has to be a question... what do YOU think?
Tom, never heard of the thing, but OMG, here was the answer to all the questions about where to go to see all of Europe by those folks with only a few days to spend on their trip. Think of all the snarky replies that could have been made to these naive (but innocent) questions. Mini-Europe __
Just for the record, I fall in the camp of those who try not to lecture folks for asking what to more experienced eyes are seemingly stupid questions. I try to do so because I've been there myself. In a different forum over a decade ago I asked a question and got numerous replies along the lines of, "By asking this question you've demonstrated you know nothing and shouldn't even consider undertaking this project."
But the Atomium is safe?
It's strange, but I heard rumors of that happening when I was in all of places, Gibraltar. And that 'money' was going to relocate it, incorporating into some other project, similarly family friendly.
Update... apparently, this announcement came as a complete surprise to the city of Brussels and even the owner of the park, and they're starting a petition to keep it open. Here's the article, but if you don't understand Dutch, you'll have to run it through Google translate: http://www.standaard.be/artikel/detail.aspx?artikelid=DMF20120207_058 No mention of the Atomium. I'm going to assume that's not on the chopping block.
