Is Rick Steves' Paris guidebook widely available in Paris? Do you think I can buy it easily in shops near touristy areas, for example? I'm travelling in Europe for a month. I'm spending the last week in Paris, and I don't want to lug around the guidebook for the first 3 weeks of my trip because I'll be taking budget airlines with weight restrictions. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Here's a list of English bookstores in Paris--you could e-mail a few to check:
Paris Bookstores
I know the bookstore called the Red Wheelbarrow had them because I bought one there. It is on Rue St. Paul and that is a neat street to shop on as well.
Here's a bookstore and they definitely have the Rick Steves Paris book and lots of English books and magazines
WH Smith, it's at Place de la Concorde, 248 rue de Rivoli (corner with Rue Cambon), 1er arrondissement. Metro stop Concorde (lines 1, 8, and 12).
It's open 7 days a week. Mon-Sat 9 am - 7:30 pm and Sun from 1 pm - 7:30 pm.
Ask for Kim if you are there on the weekends
If you contact Rick's friendly staff or call them, they can tell you which of Rick's books are sold at which bookstores in Paris. You might want to do that, to avoid disappointment, since we won't be there to lend you our books if things don't work out the way you hope they will. Rick's staff can probably also tell you the price of Rick's books in Paris: generally, books in English are more expensive than here, especially after you multiply the euro price x 1.4 to get the true cost to you.
I notice that Rick's city guides are available electronically from Amazon for the Kindle or Ipod touch? Cheaper than the hard copy, but only if you already own a kindle or touch.
When I looked at the RS Italy guides in Milan, they cost almost twice as much as the U.S. retail price.
If you are taking budget airlines. . . .
These bookshops will likely have this book:
WH Smith, Brentanos, Shakespeare & Co., Village Voice, Red Wheelbarrow. Also considering buying a used copy at Berkeley Books, San Francisco Books, or Abbey Books. I'm not sure, but I think the current price for a new copy would be around 15 euros. You can get the addresses by googling. BTW, Shakespeare & Co. is a tourist attraction in its own right.
Thanks for all the replies! I'll check out the suggested places. It should be fun going to bookstores in Paris, in any case. I'm trying to travel as light as possible.
I bought Rick Steves' Paris a few weeks ago at one of the places mentioned above by travelfan:
WH Smith, (Place de la Concorde, 248 rue de Rivoli). It was 18.70 Euros--a little more than in the US. Next time I think I would bring it with me so I could have read it on the plane.
This was my one and only attempt to not plan--it didn't work!
